New York, NY - The men's volleyball team earned their first victory of the season, defeating John Jay 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22). The Hawk's record now stands at 1-5 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Ted Kim recorded 11 kills and 10 digs to lead the Hawks while
Sherrod Cole and Niro Osborne had an even split of 16 combined kills. Setter
Cooper Moran registered a game high 30 assists and filled the stat sheet with three kills, three service aces, three block assists and three digs. On the defensive end,
Chris Scandole posted a game high 12 digs.
Hunter had a crippling 6-0 mid set run that put them ahead 17-6 in the first. They were in the driver's seat the whole way and closed on an 8-3 run to go ahead 1-0. Things were different in the second; the Hawks played from behind until a Moran service aced tied the set at 14 apiece. Four late Purple and Gold errors gave the Bloodhounds a late 22-19 advantage that ultimately stuck. John Jay reached the 25 point plateau and tied the match at 1-1.
The Purple an Gold used an early seven point advantage in the third set and rode it all the way through to the end. A service ace from Kim and a kill from Cole to end the set gave the Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into the final set. John Jay and Hunter traded points for most of the way until a kill from Jack Nugent brought the hosts withing striking distance at 21-20. An Osborne kill and home team error gave Hunter match point. Kim hammered home the final point to seal the victory, 25-22.
The Purple and Gold are back in action on Thursday, March 3 when they host CCNY in a CUNYAC matchup. First serve is slated for a 6pm start.
