Brooklyn, N.Y. - In a best-of-five matchup, the Hunter College Hawks swept the Brooklyn Bulldogs for the second time this season, 3-0, en route to their sixth straight victory on Thursday evening.
Led by
Chris Scandole, the Hawks (10-6, 10-1) had three players with five or more kills as he topped the team with eight.
Nick Yao and Scandole were also both responsible for seven digs in the win.
The teams were evenly matched in the early going of the first set, finding four different ties until 14-all. A service error from the Bulldogs sent the Hawks on a 6-0 run with contributions from
Niro Osbourne and
Gabe Mendoza to make it 19-14. The home team would only score five more points, as Hunter took the opening set 25-19.
A 7-1 start to the second frame turned into a 12-5 stretch for Hunter, who took an early lead in its penultimate matchup of the season. Brooklyn tried to cut the deficit but were plagued with service errors which the Hawks continued to capitalize on. The visiting team led by at most 14 and despite five of the final eight points going to the home team, Hunter closed out a 25-13 win to move ahead 2-0 in the match.
Brooklyn was never able to get past the Hawks in the third set, although they managed to string together some points to help the cause. A kill from Mendoza coupled with consecutive errors from the hosts (including a block by
Sherrod Cole and Scandole), put the visiting team ahead 21-13, and they never looked back.
Chris Schortgen and the Hawks are back in action on Friday, April first for the CUNYAC regular season finale against York.
