Softball NCAA Run Comes to an End; Falls to Wilson, 2-0

With the loss, the Hawks conclude the season at 22-14 overall

Newport News, VA - The Hunter softball team resumed NCAA action earlier this afternoon with their second round game against Wilson College. The Hawk defense was solid all game and did not commit an error, but offensively, were held to just one hit. The Phoenix were able to put two runs on the board which proved to be just enough to make it through to the end of the seventh. The 2-0 loss brings Hunter's season to a close and puts their record at 22-14.

Samantha Marsala recorded the only hit for the Hawks on the day which came in the top of the third. In the circle, T'ea Panagakos made the start and hurled two innings while holding Wilson scoreless and giving up just one hit and striking otu one. Leah Dillon entered for relief and threw four innings while giving up six hits, two earned runs and walking one.

The Hawks were unable to put anyone on base in the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, the Phoenix had runners on first and second with one out, but a heads up play by Paige Witalec to get the lead runner out at third on a grounder helped eliminate the threat. Naomi Butter fouled out to end the inning.

Marsala led off the top of the third with a single down the right field line, and then advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kayla Pilotti to give Hunter a chance to scored. However, they were unable to capitalize. Wilson got their first run scored in the bottom of the third to make it 1-0. Witalec reached on an error by the short stop in the top of the fourth, but did not get any further than first base.

The Phoenix tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth, forcing the Hawks to chase two with three innings left to play. However, they were unable to produce base runners and came up short with the final score 2-0 in favor of Wilson.

For her efforts, Samantha Marsala was named to the Regional All-Tournament Team.

The Hawks conclude the 2022 season with a record of 22-14. The year included a CUNYAC Championship; their first since 2008, and a perfect 20-0 mark in league action.
