Softball Falls to NYU in Regular Season Finale

The Hawks were shut out in game one and lost 9-3 in game two.

New York, NY - The softball team closed out the regular season on Tuesday with a double header against non-conference NYU. The Hawks were blanked 8-0 in the first game and then fell 9-3 in the second. The losses move their overall record to 19-11 as they begin post season play later this week.

Game 1 (Hunter-0 | NYU-8)
The Hawk bats struggled at the plate as they managed just two hits. Nicole Bowe and Jessica Fowler were the lone players to register singles while Alyssa Curiale was the third baserunner for Hunter after reaching on a HBP. T'ea Panagakos lasted four innings and allowed eight runs on 13 hits while Leah Dillon went the final inning with one hit allowed.

Hunter retired the first three batters and then squashed a scoring threat thanks to a heads up throw from Paige Witalec at shortstop to catcher Samantha Marsala to throw the lead runner out at the plate and prevent a run in the second. A three-RBI home run in the top of the third put the Violets on the board first. They tacked on another four in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it an 8-0 affair. The Hawks did not have an answer for Violet pitcher, Marina Egbert and would be held scoreless.

Game 2 (Hunter-3 | NYU-9)
The Hawks spread out their seven hits between six different batters with Bowe earning two of them. Olivia Palumbo, Witalec and Kayla Pilotti each had one hit and one run scored in the loss. Sarah Schor suffered the loss after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits. Dillon hurled the final 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on three hits.

The Violets put up two runs in each of the first three innings to make it 6-0. The Hawks went three up, three down in the first two innings and put their first baserunner on thanks to a Jessica Fowler walk in the third, but it's as far as she would advance. They showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth when Palumbo and Witalec led off with back-to-back singles. Olivia Woodruff and Marsala had back-to-back RBI's to put the Hawks on the board as they cut the deficit to 6-2.

NYU used two home runs in the sixth to bump their lead back to six. With last licks in the bottom of the seventh, the Purple and Gold had runners on second and third with two outs when Bowe ripped an RBI single to right field. However, the threat was neutralized as NYU recorded the final out, closing the game with the scoreboard reading 9-3.

The Hawks return to action later this week when they begin play in the CUNYAC Championship Tournament.
