Hawks win in Home Opener over St. Joseph's Long Island 3-1

BOX SCORE New York, NY-  The Hunter College Women's Volleyball team won 3-1 over St. Joseph's Long Island.  This was the first home match for the Hawks and the faithful fans who were not able to attend games in person at the sportsplex showed up in full force!

In a tight battle the Hawks took home the 3-1 win, by taking Set #1 25-23, set #2 25-20, dropping set #3 19-25, and winning the 4th set 28-26.  As a team Hunter had 42 kills, 9 service aces, 8 blocks, and an impressive back line defense with 73 digs.  A balanced team effort the Hawks had 8 players register a kill, and all 14 hawks that played grabbed at least one dig.

Tionna Moss led Hunter once again with 9 kills, freshman Bethany Tomaneng filled up the stat sheet once again with 20 assists, 3 aces, 11 digs and 5 kills.  Opposite her freshman counterpart Lily Mattison mad her presence known with 6 kills, a 5 total blocks, including 2 solo blocks.  Kiara Abreu also chipped in with 14 assists.

The first set was a back and forth evenly matched challenge.  The Hawks grabbed an early 2-1 lead but never pulled further than 3 points ahead.  Tomaneng had 10 of her 20 assists in the first set, and ended the first game with one of her 5 kills giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

In set number two Hunter jumped out to a 13-5 lead but St. Joseph's came roaring back with 8 unanswered points to tie it up at 13 apiece.  The Hawks were once again able to pull ahead 23-16, St. Joe's made a small run, but Hunter put the game away 25-20.

The third set was taken over by St. Joseph's early on.  Tied at 1-1 St. Joseph's Outside Hitter Madison Gremil put down one of her match high 13 kills and they never looked back taking the set 25-19.

The fourth and deciding set started much like the third set.  Hunter was down 2-1 and never got even until an ace from Tomaneng tied the score 22-22.   After trading points Outside Hitter Erin Dugan knocked a big swing off of a double block for a side out and taking a 26-25 lead.  Bouncing right back St. Joseph's Jacki Wolf put down a kill for the last point they would have.  A service error gave Hunter a 27-26 lead, and Moss was able to put down her 9th a final kill for the final point of the match.
Hunter improved to 3-1 on the year with the win, the lose drops St. Joseph's to 1-4.  On Saturday the Hawks travel to Arcadia for a 1pm first serve.
