Montclair, N.J.- The Hunter College women's basketball team traveled to Montclair State on Tuesday evening where they faced a 83-79 setback against the Red Hawks.
Hunter jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with back-to-back threes from
Erin Cosio and
Alexa Charles but were unable to maintain as Montclair took the lead in the seventh minute and maintained for the remainder of the first quarter. The Purple and Gold outscored their opponent 25-18 in the second period to take a 44-39 lead heading into the intermission. Hunter was able to keep the pace and maintain the edge for the majority of the third quarter but Montclair tied it up in the last minute to send the teams into the final period of play in a 64-64 tie. Despite Hunter's efforts, the home team took the lead and held on for the remainder of the game as Hunter was dealt a 79-83 loss pushing each team's record to 2-4 overall.
Charles led Hunter in scoring in her 38 minutes on the court with 28 points. The CUNYAC Player of the Week also grabbed nine rebounds and five steals while dishing out seven assists. Cosio also tallied double-digit points with 11, including three from beyond the arc.
Kennedy DeRuy also added 11 points off the bench while grabbing seven rebounds, contributing to Hunter's 22 overall bench points.
Katie Burke added 10 points of her own followed by Nina Hennessey and
Makkedah Murray who added eight a piece.
Overall, Hunter out shot its opponent, 47.8% to 40.0% and shot an impressive 40.7% from three.
Hunter returns to the court on Dec. 1st as they host crosstown rival, Baruch in the annual Homecoming doubleheader. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
