New York, NY- The Hunter College softball team split a double header with visiting St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a non-conference match up today. The Hawks returned to their home field and after dropping game 1 in extra innings, they bounced back for a 2-1 win in game 2.
In game 1 Hunter took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Leah Dillon started the inning off with a leadoff walk, and was sacrificed over to 2nd on a bunt by
Adriana Ramirez. Johany Galva put the pressure on a the defense with a hard hit ground ball to 3rd base and her speed forced the defense to rush the play. The Hawks took advantage when Dillon drew a throw over to third, and advanced home on the errant throw.
In the top of the 4th St. Joseph's tied the game up after a leadoff single, a wild pitch and a double. Both teams held each other scoreless through the next three innings and forced extra innings. With the runner starting on second to begin the inning in the tie breaker rule, St. Joseph's put the pressure on by putting the ball in play. Two fielders choices led to the bases being loaded until the Bears scored 4 after a double, a sacrifice fly and an error.
Down 5-1 in the bottom of the 8th, the Hawks started with a runner on second.
Jessica Fowler drew a leadoff walk, followed by a double from
Paige Witalec. THe Hawks were now down 5-2 with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs. THe St. Joseph's defense stepped up by throwing Fowler out at the plate on a ground ball to second base. They turned off the hawks rally as the game ended with two runners on and the tieing run at the plate.
In game #2 all of the scoring took place in the second inning. St. Joe's jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two hits and fielders choice. To start the bottom of the second Pitcher
Leah Dillon helped herself with a leadoff double,
Brianna Musco drew a walk, and
Adriana Ramirez had a hard hit single that loaded the bases. Sophomore
Jessica Fowler stepped up and drove the ball into the fencing missing a grand slam by only a few feet, the double drove in 2 runs.
Pitcher
Leah Dillon did not need any other runs, for the 7 innings pitched she spread out 9 hits, had 2 strikeouts and zero walks, only giving up the 1 earned run. Dillon now has both of the Hawks wins when she was in the circle.
Next up for Hunter is traveling to New Jersey City University on Saturday for a double header with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
