Men's Volleyball Defeats CCNY in Semifinals; Advances to Championship

New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's volleyball team continued it's undefeated conference record in the post-season on Thursday evening as they faced CCNY at home, garnering a 3-0 win to advance to the championship where they will go head to head with cross-town rival, Baruch College for the post-season title.

Top seeded Hunter faced off against no. 4 CCNY with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-12 performance. The first set saw the Beavers jump out to an early lead but by their sixth point the Hawks had matched them and took a three point lead when a string of attack errors plagued CCNY. The two teams kept it close but the Hawks took off towards the end, scoring seven of the last 10 points to take a 1-0 lead.

Set no. 2 proved to be a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with neither getting more than a three-point edge until three consecutive points, topped off with a service ace by Ted Kim, gave the Hawks the largest lead of the set at 18-12. From there, Hunter logged six more kills including three straight with a pair by Andrew Estiverne and another from Kim to jump out to a 24-17 lead. An attack error by the Beavers gave the Purple and Gold their final point of the set as they went up 2-0 for the match.

Hunter dominated the final set of the game, scoring 11 straight points to start off with a 12-1 lead. From there, the Beavers were able to interupt the volly added ten points compared to the Hawks' 13 but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the no. 1 seed's hot start and Hunter took home the sweep to advance to the Championship match.

Hunter came out on top in almost all categories, as the team hit for .287 with 43 kills and 31 digs, compared to CCNY's .015 with 16 kills and 21 digs. Matisse Lee-Maarek led with 16 kills, followed by David Lou with 10 and Kim with eight. Hunter Moran had a game-high nine digs while Nick Yao tacked on eight. Hunter Moran also led with three service-aces. Cooper Moran paced the Hawks with 40 of the team's 41 total assists. The two teams were even with five blocks each, as Lee-Maarek had three while Kim and Niro Osborne each added a pair of their own.
