Brooklyn, N.Y.- The no. 3 seeded Hunter College men's tennis team upset no. 2 Brooklyn College in the semifinals of the CUNYAC Tournament on Sunday afternoon, 5-4, to advance to the championship match.
After being defeated 3-6 in the regular season by the Bulldogs, Hunter stepped on the court with a vengeance as the squad looked to advance to the championship game for the second consecutive year.
In doubles play all three matches were close. After dropping no. 1 doubles at an 8-6 mark, the Hawks were resilient, as the combination of
Justin Pazmino and
Kenneth Del Cid edged out their opponent 8-7 for the first Hunter win of the day, followed by an 8-6 victory at no. 3 by
Austin Martinez and
Anil Singh.
The Hawks won three of their six singles matches, starting with a relentless three set win from Jairo Boquero Molina defeating Craig Pazarecki at no. 2 (7-5, 6-3, 6-1). After dropping the first set, 4-6, Pazmino fought back to take the next two 6-1, 6-4, for a win at no. 3 singles over his opponent, Ryan Hume. Securing the win for the Hawks Martinez took a three set victory at no. 5 singles (the 3-6, 6-4, 6-1).
Hunter will face off against top-seeded Baruch College in a rematch of last year's championship match on April 27th at 3:00 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
