New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team defeated CCNY at home on Friday evening, 72-70 to advance to 3-2 in conference play (6-10 overall) while the Beavers dropped to 2-3 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference, and 9-7 overall.
The visitors took control of the game early on, leading by as much as seven on two separate occasions. The Hawks showed resilience, fighting to close the gap as a layup in the paint by
Ryan Lau at 7:55 gave Hunter its first lead of the game at 22-21. The two teams continued to trade points but a three from
Jack Meyers followed by a good free throw from
Luka Jakic gave Hunter and eight point lead at 1:35. A buzzer beater by Jakic gave the Hawks a 36-30 lead heading into halftime. The Beavers tied the game up, 38-38, at 15:30 but Hunter took the lead back seconds later with a free throw from Lau and would remain ahead for the rest of the game.
Kareem McDonald led the Hawks with 20 points, while
Jack Meyers and
Luka Jakic contributed 17 each. Jakic also grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the team.
Despite being outs hot by CCNY 46.2% to 39.7, the Hawks were able to emerge with the win.
