Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawks Falter at Maritime, 91-68, Despite Strong Bench Effort

Throggs Neck, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team faced a tough challenge on the road against SUNY Maritime on Friday evening at Reisenberg Gymnasium, falling to the non-conference opponent, 91-68. Despite the setback, several Hawks made notable contributions, with highlights off the bench.

Hunter (1-2) got off to a slow start, managing only 29 points in the first half while shooting just 32% from the field compared to the Mariners' (3-0) 44 points. Despite the early struggles, Sal Saputo worked tirelessly to keep the Hawks within striking distance. Saputo led the way with 13 points, nine rebounds, and a steal, demonstrating tenacity on both ends of the court. He was a key presence on the boards, securing three offensive rebounds to extend possessions for Hunter, while converting five of eight attempts from the line.

Kevin Caminero came off the bench to deliver an impressive performance. In just 15 minutes of action, he netted nine points, shooting 3-of-6 from the floor and connecting on two three-pointers. His shooting provided a much needed spark and helped Hunter find rhythm in the second half, where they improved their overall field goal percentage to 45.5%.

Max Somershaf also gave the Purple and Gold a lift from the bench, contributing seven points, including a critical three that briefly shifted momentum. Ernie Parada Jr. was highlight in limited minutes, efficiently scoring seven points on 2-of-3 shooting and converting three of four free throws. The senior added two rebounds and played physical defense in the paint.

Casey Meyers was steady in his 20 minutes of play, adding five points and collecting five rebounds. He also dished out two assists, helping facilitate the offense when Hunter looked to climb back into the game. Meyers' versatility on defense was crucial, though foul trouble limited his overall impact.

Hunter's offense gained momentum in the second half, with the team shooting 40% from three-point range and 75% from the charity stripe. They showed grit and improved ball movement, finishing with 16 assists as a team, but turnovers remained a hurdle, as the Hawks committed 18 on the night. The team's 36 total rebounds kept them competitive, with 10 coming off the offensive glass to generate second-chance points.

Despite the loss, Hunter's bench shined, scoring 40 of the team's 68 points. Their depth and ability to contribute across the board will be an asset as the season progresses.

The Hawks look to bounce back, as they return to the court on Nov. 19 at Purchase College. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
