Hawks Fall Short in Home Battle Against SUNY New Paltz

New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team fell short, 90-60 to SUNY New Paltz at home on Tuesday evening.

While the game didn't go their way, the Purple and Gold (1-5) had several standout performances that underscored their potential for growth as the season progresses.

Donovon Cola led the way offensively for Hunter, delivering an impressive 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including two three-pointers. His efficient scoring was a bright spot for the team, complemented by four rebounds and a steal. Sal Saputo also displayed his versatility, contributing 18 points, including a stellar 9-for-11 performance from the free-throw line. Saputo's aggressive play kept Hunter competitive against New Paltz (4-0) the first half, and he added three rebounds and an assist to his stat line. Casey Meyers anchored the Hawks' efforts on the boards, grabbing a team-high seven rebounds while adding five points and four assists. Meyers' hustle was pivotal in limiting second-chance opportunities for the opposition.

Hunter showed grit early in the game, keeping the score close and demonstrating improved ball movement. They recorded eight assists as a team, with Meyers and others creating scoring opportunities. However, turnovers—19 in total—and struggles from beyond the arc (5-for-17) hindered their ability to close the gap in the second half. Despite the loss, Hunter's bench provided valuable contributions, with David Kruszewski and Max Somershaf combining for six points and bringing energy to the court. The second-unit players also held their own defensively against a deep New Paltz roster.

The Purple and Gold returns to the court on Dec. 7 as they travel Manhattanville for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on the road, before returning home for Hunter's annual Homecoming against Baruch on Dec. 6.
