BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team(4-3, 1-0 CUNYAC) made a resounding start to conference play Thursday night, overpowering their opponent in an 84-48 rout at the in Hunter's annual homecoming celebration.
Alexa Charles delivered a career performance, dropping a game-high 40 points on an efficient 16-for-24 shooting while pulling down 12 rebounds. Charles dominated inside, scoring 34 of Hunter's 84 points in the paint and providing a defensive anchor with four blocks and four steals.
Guard Erin Cosio also shined as she contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, and two assists while shooting 75% from the field.
Katie Burke added eight points, including two three-pointers, and chipped in two assists. Off the bench, Kimberly Lau and Makkedah Murray combined for 13 points, with Lau dishing out four assists and grabbing five rebounds.
The Hawks' precision shooting was a key factor, as they hit 54.2% of their shots, including 31.3% from beyond the arc. Their relentless defense forced 24 turnovers, leading to 21 points, and they capitalized on second chances with 17 points off offensive rebounds.
Hunter set the tone early, using defensive intensity and sharp shooting to build a 15-9 lead in the first quarter. The Hawks widened the gap significantly in the second quarter, outscoring Baruch 28-13, to take a 43-22 lead into halftime.
Hunter's dominance extended across all four quarters. After leading 15-9 after the first, the Hawks erupted for 28 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 43-22 halftime lead. They maintained their high level of play in the second half, sealing the win with contributions from every player.
Hunter returns to the court on Dec. 12 against Yeshiva University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Baruch's ARC Arena.
