Hunter Falls in Conference Opener Against Baruch

New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's basketball team opened its CUNYAC conference play with a tough loss during the 2024 Homecoming game at the Hunter College Sportsplex. Despite an impressive second-half effort, the Hawks were unable to overcome a slow start, falling to Baruch 101-69 in front of 345 fans.

The Hawks (1-7, 0-1 CUNYAC) struggled early, scoring just 20 points in the first half while allowing 50. However, the team showed resilience, putting up 49 points in the second half, outscoring their first-half total by a wide margin.

Hunter's offensive efforts were led by senior Sal Saputo, who tallied 15 points and four rebounds. Saputo's ability to attack the rim and draw fouls resulted in a near-perfect 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line. ack Meyers provided a spark off the bench, matching Saputo's 15 points, including three three-pointers, and adding five rebounds.

Guard Casey Meyers also contributed eight points and three assists, while Enzo Caceres-Roussel added six points and an active defensive presence. The Hawks' bench played a key role, contributing 36 points, with notable performances from Kristian Nunez and Marcuz Casulla, who combined for 8 points and solid defensive hustle.

Rebounding proved to be a challenge for Hunter, as Baruch dominated the boards, grabbing 56 rebounds to Hunter's 31. Despite the disparity, senior forward Donovon Cola and center Jayden Jarret worked tirelessly in the paint, each contributing on the defensive glass.

While the final score favored Baruch, the Hawks' second-half surge showcased their potential moving forward.

The Purple and Gold return to the court on Tuesday Dec. 10 as they host USMMA in the Sportsplex at 6:00 p.m.
