Hawks Split Double Header At Old Westbury

Old Westbury, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team split a double header at The College at Old Westbury on Monday afternoon, taking the first game at 4-3, before falling 4-7 in the second as the Hawks advance to 2-6, while the Panthers moved to 9-4.

Game 1 - Hunter 4, OW 3
The game started off quietly, with both teams unable to put any runs on the board in the first two innings. However, Hunter broke the deadlock in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs thanks to a timely single by Elizabeth Thompson and an RBI single from Jessica Fowler.

Old Westbury responded  in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on some opportunities to score three runs and take the lead. However, the Hawks' pitchers managed to contain the Old Westbury offense for the remainder of the game.

Hunter clawed their way back into the game, tying the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single from Nicole Bowe. Then, in the decisive seventh inning, the Hawks managed to push across the winning run, securing the victory with a sacrifice fly from Grace Basil.

Pitcher Brielle Staskavage put in a solid performance for Hunter, earning the win with 3.2 innings pitched and allowing three runs.

Game 2 - Hunter 4, OW 7
The game started with a burst of energy from Hunter, as they managed to score three runs in the top of the first inning. Johany Galva got on base with a single and was able to steal second, and Grace Basil and Paige Witalec each got on base. Samantha Marsala then garnered an RBI as Basil scored.  Sonia Rosales Rosenthal's timely double brought in two more runs with Witalec and Marsala scoring, setting the tone early on.

Old Westbury responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning, cutting Hunter's lead to 3-1. However, the Hawks' defense held strong, preventing further damage.

In the following innings, both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, with neither side able to add to their tally until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Panthers managed to score two runs, tying the game at 3-3.

Old Westbury seized control of the game in the fifth inning, scoring two more runs to take a 5-3 lead. Despite Hunter's efforts to rally in the later innings, they were unable to overcome the deficit.

Hunter did manage to add another run in the top of the seventh inning, as Fowler got on a base with a double and was eventually driven home by Marsala, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback, as Old Westbury's pitcher closed out the game effectively.

The Hawks continue their season on April 3 with a double header at Lesley University. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
