Staten Island, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team dropped a pair of road games to NYU on Thursday afternoon, as the Hawks' record dropped to11-17 overall, while NYU advanced to 8-28.
Game 1: Hunter 0. NYU 8
From the outset, NYU established their presence, scoring in each of the first four innings, while their defense kept Hunter at bay, limiting them to eight hits throughout the game.
Hunter's offense attempted to rally, led by Olivia Palumbo and Sophia Perez, each contributing with a pair of hits, but were unable to convert those hits into runs, leaving nine runners stranded on base.
Alyssa Curiale's double provided a glimmer of hope for Hunter, but ultimately, they were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
On the mound, Grace Basil faced a formidable NYU lineup, pitching 5.1 innings, conceding 11 hits and eight runs, despite managing to strike out two batters. Basil, despite her efforts, took the loss, bringing her record to 0-4 for the season.
Game 2: Hunter 5, NYU 6
The Hawks fought back in the second game, starting off putting up three runs in the first inning to establish an early lead.
Olivia Palumbo's triple and subsequent RBI set the tone for Hunter's offense, while
Sophia Perez and Sonia R. Rosenthal contributed with key hits of their own.
However, New York University responded swiftly, chipping away at Hunter's lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter's offense continued to produce throughout the game, adding another run in the third inning and one more in the seventh, but it wasn't quite enough to secure the win.
On the mound, Brielle Staskavage started strong for Hunter, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. Despite facing some challenges, Staskavage displayed resilience and determination throughout her outing.
Grace Basil entered the game in relief but was unable to halt NYU's offense, conceding a run in her 1.1 innings pitched, ultimately taking the loss for Hunter.
