BOX SCORE 2 Madison, N.J.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team continued its season with a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, against Drew University and Manhattanville University. Hunter (5-3) started the day off with a 3-1 win against Drew (1-7), but fell shot in five sets to Manhattanville (4-5)
Match 1: Hunter 3, Drew 1
Hunter's started a commanding 3-1 victory over Drew University in the first match of a trimatch at Baldwin Gym, .The Hawks took the match with set scores of 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-21, showcasing their balanced attack and resilient defense.
Amina Moummad led the charge for Hunter with an impressive 14 kills on 38 swings, hitting .316 for the match. Her offensive firepower was complemented by her 15 digs and 1.5 total blocks, earning her a match-high 14.5 points. The steady play of setter Bethany Tomaneng was pivotal as she dished out 40 assists and contributed five service aces and 16 digs.
Izabella Williams delivered a solid performance, notching 10 kills and contributing defensively with 13 digs. Williams also assisted on a block, adding to her overall 10.5 points for the match. Erin Dugan's all-around game was also notable, as she hit .500 with three kills on six attempts while collecting 17 digs, a pair of aces, and tallying seven assists.
Hunter's defense was relentless, with four players registering double-digit digs, led by Dugan and Tomaneng. The Hawks' team effort in serve receive and floor defense kept Drew's offense at bay, particularly in the first and second sets where the Rangers were held to a negative hitting percentage and a .073 hitting clip, respectively.
The Hawks faltered slightly in the third set, hitting only .044 and allowing Drew to capitalize, but bounced back in the fourth to seal the match. The Purple and Gold's consistent serving and superior blocking played a crucial role in closing out the final set.
Match 2: Hunter 2, Manhattanville 3
The Hawks fell just short in a hard-fought five-set thriller against Manhattanville (4-5, 0-0 Skyline), in the second match of the day. Despite winning the first and third sets, Hunter struggled to close out, falling 25-21, 24-26, 25-19, 17-25, 12-15 in a match full of momentum swings.
Williams was the standout performer for the Hawks, tallying 18 kills on 50 attempts, hitting at a .260 clip. Her offensive contribution was supported by her 15 digs and two assisted blocks, contributing 20 total points in a stellar two-way effort. Moummad also turned in a strong performance, registering 16 kills while hitting .261 and adding 15 digs, making her a force at the net and in the back row.
Hunter started strong, hitting .214 in the first set to take an early lead, but narrowly lost the second set despite a late surge. The Hawks responded with an efficient third set, hitting .417 with 17 kills, led by Williams and Moummad. However, the fourth set saw a drop in momentum, with Hunter hitting only .108, allowing Manhattanville to tie the match and force a decisive fifth set.
Lily Mattison provided solid offensive support, recording 11 kills on just 18 swings for a .444 hitting percentage. Tomaneng kept the offense running smoothly with 39 assists while adding three service aces and 19 digs. Dugan anchored the defense with 15 digs, though the Hawks struggled to keep pace with Manhattanville's balanced attack in the latter stages.
Despite the loss, Hunter's defensive efforts were commendable, with four players notching double-digit digs.
The Hawks continue their season on Sept. 17 for a road match against USMMA. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
