BOX SCORE Flushing, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's tennis team started its CUNYAC season with a commanding 5-0 sweep against John Jay on Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Hawks, now 1-0 in conference play, displayed total control in both doubles and singles, showcasing the depth and strength of their squad.
In doubles action, Hunter (1-1, 1-0 CUNYAC) wasted no time establishing their dominance. The pair of Anna Chapko and Julia Aksamentova at #1 doubles set the tone with an 8-2 victory over John Jay's (0-1, 0-1 CUNYAC) top duo. Their communication and well-placed shots were key to breaking the opponents early and often.
At #2 doubles, Sara Contreras and Sara Novo continued the momentum for Hunter, claiming an 8-4 victory. Their aggressive play at the net helped them close out the match comfortably. The #3 doubles pair, Ava Cooper and Samantha Soued, completed the clean sweep in doubles with a perfect 8-0 performance, dismantling their opponents with a combination of strong serves and consistent groundstrokes.
Heading into singles, the Hawks kept the pressure on. Sara Contreras at #2 singles was near-flawless, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-0 in a match that highlighted her consistency from the baseline and her ability to capitalize on errors. Julia Aksamentova, playing at #4 singles, was equally dominant, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Although several matches went unfinished, Hunter was well on its way to victory in each. Sara Novo at #3 singles was leading 6-0 when the match was halted, while Samantha Soued at #6 singles also had a commanding lead, 6-0, before play was stopped.
The Hawks continue their season on Sept. 18 as they host Pratt in a nonconference matchup at 6:00 p.m.
