Hunter Stifled In 2-0 Loss to St. Joe's LI

BOX SCORE Patchogue, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team traveled to St. Joseph's Long Island for a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Hunter (0-5) was unable to find the back of the net in their matchup against the Golden Eagles (2-1-2). Despite strong individual efforts, the Hawks' offense was kept in check, while their defense faced constant pressure in the 2-0 loss.

Hunter goalkeeper Matthew Heimowitz stood out, registering five saves in his 75 minutes of action before being subbed out for Max Tsigalnitsky, who contributed another save during his short stint in goal. St. Joseph's relentless attack kept both keepers busy, with Heimowitz and Tsigalnitsky each making crucial stops to keep the Hawks within striking distance.

Forward Ben Avakook was Hunter's most active offensive player, recording three shots on goal. His early attempt at the 3-minute mark forced a save from St. Joseph's goalkeeper, but despite Avakook's pressure, the Hawks were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Midfielder Bradley Espejo also tested the St. Joseph's defense, recording a shot on goal in the second half that was similarly turned away.

Defensively, the Hawks were led by Christian Rodriguez and Conor Sullivan, who both logged heavy minutes. Rodriguez was a key figure in holding off the St. Joseph's attack, playing the full 90 minutes, while Sullivan put in 87 minutes of work at the back.

Hunter had a few bright moments on set pieces, earning three corner kicks, but they were unable to convert those chances. The Hawks' discipline came into question, receiving two yellow cards during the match.

Ultimately, the Hawks were outshot 26-6, and although they held their own for large portions of the match, the two goals conceded—one in each half—sealed their fate.

Hunter returns to the field in search of its first win on Sept. 18 as they host Abbertus Magnus on Randall's Island Field #70. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
