New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball grabbed a thrilling five set victory over John Jay, in the squad's first conference game of the 2024 season. The Hawks emerged victorious with 3-2 in a closely contested match in the Doghouse on Thursday evening, as they improved to 7-2 overall while kicking off their CUNYAC campaign with a crucial win.
Hunter's offensive strategy was spearheaded by Izabella Williams, who delivered an impressive performance with 18 kills, contributing significantly to the team's overall offensive output. Williams exhibited her skills throughout the match, especially in the pivotal fourth set, where she helped Hunter secure a crucial 25-18 win. Her tenacity at the net was a game-changer and solidified her role as a key player for the Hawks.
Simone McIntyre and Amina Moummad also made noteworthy contributions, with McIntyre adding 11 kills and displaying resilience despite some tough moments. Moummad, with 10 kills, proved to be a reliable option for setter Bethany Tomaneng, who notched 28 assists and demonstrated excellent playmaking skills throughout the match.
On defense, the Hawks were highlighted by Erin Dugan's standout performance with 11 digs, thwarting John Jay's attacks. Additionally, the team's block defense was effective, with notable contributions from Lily Mattison and a couple of key stops that helped maintain momentum.
The match unfolded with a series of lead changes and tight scores, especially in the first four sets. Hunter faced early challenges, dropping the first set 25-19, but quickly rebounded, taking the second set 25-22 and showcasing their grit. After dropping the third set, the Hawks rallied back, showing determination in the fourth set to clinch it decisively, 25-18. The fifth set proved to be a statement of Hunter's resilience, as they dominated John Jay, finishing strong with a 15-6 victory.Â
The Hawks return to the court on Sept. 21 as they host Farmingdale State College in at 12:00 p.m. match in the Sportsplex.
