BOX SCORE New York, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team continued its undefeated start to the season with a dramatic straight-set victory over St. Joseph's (L.I.), winning 26-24, 25-21, 26-24, in the team's home opening match. The win propels Hunter to a 3-0 start to the season, while St. Joseph's falls to 0-4.
Leading the charge for Hunter was Izabella Williams, who tallied 10 kills, two aces, and 10 digs, anchoring both the offense and defense. Williams was relentless at the net, delivering key points when it mattered most, especially in the tight first and third sets. Right alongside her was Lily Mattison, who had a standout all-around performance with six kills and five aces. Her aggressive serving made all the difference, rattling St. Joseph's to add to the Hawks' momentum.
Amina Moummad also shined, registering nine kills and adding key offensive support, while Erin Dugan contributed across the board with nine digs and a service ace. Bethany Tomaneng, Hunter's talented setter, dished out 17 assists, keeping the offense flowing and spreading the ball efficiently.
The Hawks were dominant from the service line, racking up 12 aces compared to just four from St. Joseph's. Mattison's five aces were instrumental in swinging the match Hunter's way, especially in the second set, where her serving put the Golden Eagles on the back foot and gave the Hawks a comfortable cushion. Despite a dip in hitting percentage after a strong first set, Hunter's resilience and ability to capitalize on St. Joseph's errors ultimately sealed the win.
Hunter's defense was rock-solid, with 49 total digs, including 10 from Williams and eight from Tomaneng. The Hawks' ability to keep rallies alive and frustrate St. Joseph's attackers was a crucial part of their success.
The Hawks continue thier season on Friday Sept. 6, as they host Emmanual College in the Sportsplex. First serve is slated for 6:00 p.m.
