Hawks Struggle Against Regis, William Paterson in Road Trimatch

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Wayne, N.J.- The Hunter College women's volleyball suffered its first losses of the season on Saturday afternoon in a road tri-match against William Paterson and Regis College.

Game 1 - Hunter 1, William Paterson 3
In the first game of the day, the Hawks put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell to William Paterson in four sets (7-25, 20-25, 25-23, 12-25). Despite the loss, the Hawks showcased their resilience and determination, pushing the Pioneers to the brink in several sets and securing a strong third-set victory.

The Hawks (4-1) struggled to find their rhythm early on, with William Paterson jumping to an early lead in the first set. However, Hunter rallied in the second and third sets, improving their play and fighting back with aggressive attacks and solid defense. The third set was a particular highlight for the Hawks, as they clawed their way to a hard-earned 25-23 win, keeping the match alive.

Lily Mattison was a standout for Hunter, leading the team with 13 kills and hitting a solid .194, contributing 16 total points. Her offensive firepower played a crucial role in the Hawks' third-set triumph. Amina Moummad and Izabella Williams added seven and six kills respectively, with Moummad also contributing nine points overall. Williams struggled early but still managed to impact the game with key blocks and digs to keep the Hawks competitive. Setter Xheni Doci orchestrated the offense with 22 assists, ensuring the Hawks stayed in contention, especially during the third set. Erin Dugan was pivotal defensively, tallying 15 digs, while Doci added 15 of her own to protect the backcourt.

Game 2: Hunter 0, Regis 3
In the second match of their trimatch the Purple and Gold fell to Regis (MA) in straight sets (17-25, 17-25, 20-25). The loss drops Hunter to 4-2 on the season, as Regis (MA) improved their record to 5-2 with a commanding performance.

Despite Hunter's determination, they faced difficulty breaking through Regis' strong attack and defense. The Hawks managed to keep all three sets competitive, tying the scores multiple times, but ultimately fell short as Regis controlled the momentum throughout the match.

Izabella Williams led the Hawks' offense with 9 kills, hitting .143 and adding 10.5 points overall. She was supported by Lily Mattison, who contributed 6 kills but struggled with consistency, hitting -.042 in the match. Amina Moummad and Xheni Doci also added 6 and 2 kills respectively, with Doci leading the team in assists with 13.

On defensive side of the ball, Erin Dugan continued to be a steady presence for the Hawks, racking up 16 digs, while Desiree Morales had 17 digs of her own. However, Hunter's struggles with serve-receive (11 reception errors) and attack errors (26 errors total) hindered their chances of mounting a comeback.

The Hawks look to bounce back as they return to action on Sept. 14 for another tri-match on the road against Drew University and Manhattanville at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
