BOX SCORE Brooklyn, N.Y. — The Hunter College women's basketball team extended its winning streak and maintained its perfect conference record with a dominant 79-44 victory over Medgar Evers on Monday night at Cougars Cave. The Hawks (13-4, 8-0 CUNYAC) started strong and never looked back, fueled by a stellar performance from Alexa Charles and a barrage of three-pointers from Erin Cosio.
Hunter wasted no time seizing control, opening the game with a 12-2 run. Charles led the charge early, scoring inside and setting the tone defensively. Cosio knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter, helping the Hawks build a 29-11 lead after ten minutes.
The second quarter saw a defensive battle, with Hunter cooling off offensively. Medgar Evers briefly cut into the lead, but the Hawks held strong, maintaining a 37-23 advantage at halftime. Gianna Henriques provided a spark inside, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Charles dominated the glass, collecting a game-high 16 rebounds.
Hunter regained its offensive rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Medgar Evers 21-13. Charles continued to create havoc on both ends, finishing with a game-high 25 points to go along with six assists and six steals. Cosio added another three-pointer in the frame, finishing with 19 points, including five made threes. The Hawks' lead ballooned to 58-36 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as Hunter closed out the game with a 21-8 advantage. Katie Burke drained another three-pointer to finish with 11 points, and Kennedy DeRuy provided key minutes off the bench. The Hawks dominated the rebounding battle 50-41 and converted 25 points off turnovers to seal the convincing victory.
The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 31 as they host John Jay College at 5:00 p.m. in the Sportsplex.
