BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's basketball team opened the 2025–26 season in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon, riding a historic triple-double from star guard
Alexa Charles, her career fourth, to a 94–46 victory in the season opener at the Pratt Institute.
Charles put on a commanding performance from the opening tip, scoring the game's first basket just five seconds in as she set the tone for a wire-to-wire Hunter lead. The senior was everywhere early, knocking down a pair of threes in the first quarter, forcing turnovers, and creating fast-break opportunities. By the end of the opening period she had already stuffed the stat sheet with scoring, rebounding, and steals on her way to one of the most complete outings of her Hunter career.
While Charles sparked the offense,
Gianna Henriques controlled the interior with a double-double of her own. Henriques scored inside off put-backs, protected the rim, and added a three-point play late in the second quarter as the Hawks pushed their lead to 47–29 at halftime. She finished with 21 points and a team-high 15 rebounds, anchoring a Hunter frontcourt that overpowered the pace of the game from the second quarter onward.
Hunter continued to pour it on in the third, again leaning on Charles, who opened the half with a mid-range jumper before adding multiple fast-break layups created off her own steals.
Kennedy DeRuy helped extend the lead with timely shooting, knocking down a three and hitting a pair of jumpers to keep the offense humming.
Mia Fuller ran the offense with poise and dished out 10 assists—several of which fed Charles in transition and Henriques in the paint.
The Hawks' bench added quality minutes in the second half, highlighted by
Ali Drake's pair of made threes and strong defensive pressure from
Aurey Tong, who buried a corner triple early in the fourth quarter.
Wanhua Peng and
Makkedah Murray also contributed on the glass, helping Hunter dominate the rebounding margin.
Charles officially secured the triple-double midway through the fourth quarter, finishing with 37 points, 13 steals, and 10 rebounds—a rare feat at any level and one of the most impressive season-opening performances in recent program history.
Hunter outscored Pratt in every quarter and closed the afternoon with 38 made field goals, 62 rebounds, 27 assists, and 39 points off turnovers. The Hawks move to 1–0 and will return to action Monday for their home opener at the Hunter Sportsplex against Merchant Marine at 6 p.m.
