NEWARK, N.J.- Alexa Charles poured in 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Hunter College women's basketball team to a commanding 62-42 road win over Rutgers-Newark on Sunday afternoon.
Charles stuffed the stat sheet in another dominant all-around performance, adding three assists, four steals, and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. She shot 11-of-30 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers, helping the Hawks (5-2) win their sixth straight game.
Hunter set the tone early with a 21-point first quarter, then outscored the Scarlet Raiders (2-5) by nine in the second to take control of the game. The Hawks led by as many as 22 and never trailed after the first few minutes.
Gianna Henriques anchored the paint with a monster 13-rebound, 6-point outing, blocking four shots and adding two assists. Makkedah Murray contributed 10 points and five rebounds, while Kennedy DeRuy hit a key early three and added four points and five boards.
Hunter's defense held Rutgers-Newark to just 29.6 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. The Hawks also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Scarlet Raiders 62–51, and racked up 17 second-chance points.
Sophie Stratton added five points off the bench, including a perfect trip to the line and a third-quarter three, while Ali Drake chipped in four points and seven rebounds. Despite going scoreless in the fourth quarter from the field, the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead thanks to free throws and continued stops.
Hunter returns to the court on Dec. 3 for a 6 p.m. game at Sarah Lawrence.
