NEW YORK- On a day dedicated to honoring its graduating seniors, the Hunter College softball team celebrated in style with a doubleheader sweep over Brooklyn College, winning 6–1 and 6–1 at Randall's Island, as the team improved to 7-3 in conference play (15-23 overall), to close out CUNYAC regular season play.
The afternoon was highlighted by a historic milestone for Jessica Fowler, who notched her 100th — and later, 101st — career hit, capping a memorable Senior Day alongside fellow seniors Paige Witalec, Nicole Bowe, and Olivia Palumbo, each of whom made major contributions on both sides of the ball.
Game 1: Hunter 6, Brooklyn 1
Hunter (15–23) opened the day with a commanding 6–1 win over the Bulldogs (14-21, 6-4 CUNYAC), sparked by early scoring and a complete-game effort from Grace Basil, who struck out six over seven innings.
Witalec and Palumbo each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, helping Hunter build a lead they would not relinquish. Palumbo added a stolen base and delivered an RBI single in the sixth, while Witalec plated a run in the first and later scored in the same frame.
Fowler reached base twice and swiped a bag, while Bowe continued her sharp hitting with a 2-for-2 performance, a double, a walk, and a run scored. She also put on a defensive clinic at third base, including a standout inning where she recorded two outs on the same play — fielding a liner and alertly doubling off a runner.
Ramirez and Thumhart each added RBIs, and Hunter totaled 13 hits without committing an error in the field.
Game 2: Hunter 6, Brooklyn 1
The Hawks wrapped up the afternoon with another 6–1 victory in Game 2, led by Fowler's milestone and another efficient outing from Basil, who scattered 10 hits over seven innings without allowing an earned run.
Fowler went 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk, and run scored — her first-inning single marking the 100th hit of her career. She added No. 101 in the third and scored twice in the win.
Bowe remained locked in at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Palumbo drove in two with a bases-loaded walk and a groundout. Witalec added a sacrifice fly and handled her shortstop duties cleanly throughout both games.
Thumhart went 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored twice, and Rosales Rosenthal contributed an RBI and a sacrifice fly.
Defensively, Hunter made timely plays to keep Brooklyn off the board, including a double play started by Bowe in the fourth and a heads-up tag at home by Fowler in the second inning.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday May 6, as they close out regular season play with a conference double header against New York University. Hunter will host the Violets on Randall's Island Field 12 at 3:00 p.m.
