NEWARK, N.J.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team opened its 2025 season with a nonconference tri-match hosted by Rutgers-Newark on Friday. The Hawks fell in the match 1-3, followed by a three set lost to the hosting Scarlet Knights.
Match 1: Hunter 1, Farmingdate State 3
The Purple and Gold (0-2) opened its 2025 campaign with a hard-fought four-set loss to Farmingdale State (2-0), falling 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19.
Captain, Simone McIntyre paced the Hawks with a team-high nine kills to go along with nine digs, while Michelle Liu added nine kills and 10.5 total points, including a solo block and a block assist. Amina Moummad delivered a strong two-way performance with seven kills on a .250 hitting percentage and nine digs.
Lily Mattison was a key contributor at the net, hitting .267 with six kills and adding two solo blocks to finish with nine points. Ana Duran chipped in with a solo block and three block assists, while Natalie Polanco tallied 12 digs, five assists, and one service ace.
Setter Madeline Snyder orchestrated the offense with 20 assists and added 14 digs in a double-double effort. As a team, Hunter totaled 36 kills on 145 attempts (.131) and racked up 58 digs and six total blocks in the match.
Match 2: Hunter 0, Rutgers-Newark 3
In the final game of Friday's tri-match, Hunter pushed host Rutgers-Newark (1-1) to the brink in the third set but ultimately fell in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 30-28.
Moummad again led the offensive effort with eight kills and added eight digs, while McIntyre followed with seven kills and a .190 attack percentage. Mattison remained steady at the net, finishing with four kills on .200 hitting and contributing a solo block and one ace.
Snyder dished out 20 assists and recorded 12 digs for her second double-double of the day, while Liu and Morrill each added four digs in the backcourt. Liu also contributed three kills and a block assist.
Hunter totaled 25 kills in the match but struggled to find consistency, finishing with a .009 hitting percentage and committing 24 attack errors. The Hawks found themselves in extended rallies throughout the final set, but despite reaching 28 points, were edged out in extras to conclude the match.
The Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season and will look to rebound in their next outing on Sept. 7 at St. Joseph's Long Island. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Patchogue, N.Y.
