NEW YORK- The Hunter College men's soccer team opened its home campaign on Wednesday afternoon with a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Saint Elizabeth, behind a commanding defensive performance and a flurry of chances on the offensive end.
The Hawks (0-1-1) were aggressive on the attack in the early stages, outshooting Saint Elizabeth (0-0-1) 16–14 overall and 9–2 in shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Leonardo Kaplan led the charge with six shots, with three on goal, including a strong chance in the 60th minute that was denied by a leaping save.
Georgios Tsiakas added four shots (two on goal), while David Zlobinsky came off the bench and contributed three shots, two of which forced saves from the opposing keeper. Ahmed Abukar and Brandon Fridburg each generated additional opportunities, but the Purple and Gold struggled with offsides, with more than five penalties stifling offensive opportunities.
In goal, Max Tsigalnitsky anchored the back line with a clean sheet, making two saves and orchestrating a back four that limited Saint Elizabeth's scoring chances.
Hunter's defensive unit of Samuel Benson, Conor Sullivan, Abdullah Al Maghrabi, and Bejhon Alerte went the full 90 minutes, displaying composure and resilience. Both Al Maghrabi and Sullivan were booked with yellow cards, but the group held firm in key moments, including a late corner and a shot in the 86th minute that sailed high.
Despite the deadlock on the scoreboard, the Hawks' aggressive play and depth as 15 players saw action, highlighted a promising step forward after their season-opening loss. They'll look to build on the momentum heading into the next match as the young roster continues to find its rhythm.
The Hawks return to action on the road Saturday, as they travel to Kings Point, N.Y. in search for their first win against United States Merchant Marine Academy.
