BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Hunter College men's basketball team earned its first City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) win of the season Wendnesday night, behind double-doubles from Jayden Jarret and Demetrios Kontos who led the hawks to a 76-63 road victory over Medgar Evers on the road.
The Hawks (3-15, 1-6 CUNYAC) led from start to finish, jumping out to a 47-31 halftime advantage behind hot shooting and efficient ball movement. Hunter shot 49.1 percent from the field and went 8-for-16 from three-point range, while outrebounding the Cougars (0-18, 0-17 CUNYAC) 48-29.
JP Maaba and Jayden Jarrett paced the Purple and Gold with 16 points apiece. Maaba added three rebounds, four assists, and a steal on 6-of-10 shooting, while Jarrett notched a double-double with 10 rebounds and went 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Demetrios Kontos recorded 12 points and 10 boards for another double-double, while Jeremiah Otasowie chipped in 11 points and three assists. Kristian Nunez contributed five points and nine rebounds, anchoring a defense that held Medgar Evers to just 36.5 percent shooting overall and 23.3 percent from long range.
Hunter's defense also forced 18 turnovers and turned them into 14 points, helping preserve a lead that ballooned to as many as 19 in the first half.
The Hawks return to the court on Jan. 23 as they host CCNY for a. 7 pm tip-off in the Sportsplex.
