Hawks Fall to Medgar Evers, 4-0

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Hunter College men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat to City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Medgar Evers College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks move to 5-7-2 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while Medgar Evers improved to 8-2-2 overall and  3-2-1 in CUNYAC play.

Prior to kickoff, Hunter celebrated Senior Day, honoring Aidan Vera, Abdullah Al Maghrabi and Mathelin Napo for their dedication and contributions to the men's soccer program. Al Maghrabi and Napo earned starts in their final regular-season home appearance as the Hawks recognized the trio's dedication to the Purple and Gold.

Goalkeeper Matthew Fridburg got off to a quick start, as he made two saves in the third and sixth minutes. Filippos Lakiotis quickly responded with a shot on target of his own at the 11th minute, but saw his attempt saved.  Medgar Evers opened the scoring shortly after and added three more goals before the 26th minute, including a penalty kick, to take a 4-0 advantage.

Despite the early deficit, the Hawks continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half. Luciano Aguirre tested the Medgar Evers goalkeeper twice in a four-minute span, forcing saves in the 35th and 39th minutes before sending another attempt just over the crossbar as the half came to a close.

Hunter's defensive effort improved after the break, holding Medgar Evers scoreless over the final 45 minutes. Matthew Fridburg anchored the Hawks in goal, making five saves across 90 minutes, including four in the opening half.

The Purple and Gold continued to search for a breakthrough in the second half. The Hawks attack continued to look for opportunities, with two shots on target in the 65th and 67th minutes. Lakiotis created one final opportunity in the 87th minute, but his shot was turned away.

Lakiotis and Aguirre led Hunter's offense, as the freshmen duo combined for six total shots, while Achilleas Fertitta-Boutis added an on target attempt.

The Purple and Gold closes out the regular season on Oct. 24 against conference opponent Lehman College. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. in the Bronx.
