Tsiakas’ Hat Trick Powers Hunter Past York, 9-1

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College men's soccer team returned to City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play Saturday afternoon with an offensive outburst, defeating York, 9-1, at Randall's Island. The Hawks improved to 3-5-1 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-6 and 0-2 in CUNYAC competition.

Hunter wasted little time getting on the board, as Jacob Davis opened the scoring in the first  minute of the match off an assist from Georgios Tsiakas. The Hawks continued to control the attack before Tsiakas doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, finishing a setup from Juan Rambal.

Tsiakas struck again less than five minutes later, this time taking advantage of a ball from goalkeeper Matthew Fridburg to push the lead to 3-0. Fernando Zuvela added another in the 35th minute off an assist from Jaerang Lee before Davis netted his second goal of the afternoon in the 38th, with Adam Hrichi providing the assist. The five first-half goals sent Hunter into the break with a commanding advantage.

The Hawks picked up where they left off after halftime. Tsiakas completed his hat trick in the 56th minute, giving him three goals and an assist on the afternoon. He finished with a team-high seven shots, placing four on goal.

Hunter's depth continued to make an impact as Abdullah Al Maghrabi found the back of the net in the 59th minute. After York got on the board, Al Maghrabi helped create Hunter's eighth goal, setting up Davide Pescerelli in the 66th minute.

Achilleas Fertitta-Boutis capped the scoring in the 71st minute, converting a chance created by Yassine Jaballah for the Hawks' ninth goal of the match. Seven different Hunter players found the back of the net in the victory, with Davis joining Tsiakas as the other Hawk with multiple goals.

Fridburg made three saves while keeping York off the board through nearly 59 minutes in goal. Lucas Moon took over for the final 31 minutes and added a save. Hunter finished with 23 shots, including 13 on goal, and generated 13 corner kicks while limiting York to eight shots.

The Hawks return to Randall's Island on Thursday, Oct. 8, when they host Yeshiva in a nonconference matchup at 3 p.m.
