Women's Hoops Celebrates Senior Night, Rolls Past Medgar Evers 90-60

NEW YORK, N.Y. -  The Hunter College women's basketball team honored its senior class of Alexa Charles, Kennedy DeRuy, Gianna Henriques, Ali Drake, Makkedah Murray and Mia Fuller on Friday and followed with a 90-60 win over Medgar Evers at the Hunter College Sportsplex.

After the pregame ceremony, Hunter (18-6, 11-2 CUNYAC) came out with energy on both ends, turning early pressure into points in transition. Charles scored the Hawks' first basket on a fastbreak layup off a steal, and Hunter held the edge through the opening quarter to lead 20-17 after one.

The game swung in the second. The Hawks tightened defensively and sped things up, outscoring Medgar Evers 27-10 in the period to take a 47-27 halftime lead. Fuller buried a pair of 3-pointers during the surge, while Henriques controlled the paint collecting 10 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks.

Hunter kept control coming out of the break, matching the Cougars 20-19 in the third to extend the margin to 67-46, then closed with a 23-14 fourth quarter as the Hawks continued to generate fastbreak chances and extra possessions.
Charles led the way with 34 points on 14-for-19 shooting, adding eight rebounds and five steals. Henriques, also honored as a senior, stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in 20 minutes, anchoring the interior at both ends.

Fuller posted 10 points with seven assists and six steals, while Murray finished with eight points, five assists and four steals to help fuel Hunter's pressure defense. DeRuy added a steady all-around line with four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Drake chipped in four points with two steals off the bench.
Hunter shot 53.5% from the field (38-for-71) and forced 27 turnovers, turning them into 30 points while racking up 39 fastbreak points.

The Hawks return to the court for their final game of the regular season on  Feb. 17 for a 5 p.m. tip-off at Brooklyn College.
