BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Hunter closed its season with a late push that brought the game down to the final possession, but the Hawks fell 64-60 at Brooklyn on Tuesday night at the West Quad Center.
Hunter (6-19, 4-10 CUNYAC) trailed by eight at halftime before using a steady second-half response to climb back into it, getting within one in the final two minutes and twice having a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing moments.
Jeremiah Otasowie led the Hawks with 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting while logging all 40 minutes. Aidan Glackin added 13 points and hit three 3-pointers, and John Paul Maaba finished with 12 points. Jayden Jarrett posted five points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Kristian Nunez chipped in six points and four rebounds.
Hunter opened the night with energy, as Glackin buried a 3-pointer on the Hawks' first possession. Otasowie followed with a layup and later knocked down a 3-pointer to briefly put Hunter in front, but Brooklyn answered with a strong finish to the first half. Hunter stayed competitive behind timely perimeter shooting — including a 3 from Demetrios Kontos — but went into the break down 33-25.
The Hawks came out sharper in the second half and began to chip away. Nunez scored early and then added a pair of free throws, and Glackin's second 3-pointer of the night pulled Hunter within one at 33-32. Moments later, Maaba connected from deep to give the Hawks their first lead of the half at 35-33, setting the tone for a back-and-forth stretch that featured multiple ties and lead changes.
With the game tight late, Hunter continued to answer with paint touches and transition chances. Jarrett scored inside off an assist from Glackin to pull the Hawks within three at 57-54 with just over two minutes remaining, and Otasowie finished a fast-break layup to make it a one-point game at 57-56 with 1:30 to play.
After Brooklyn extended the margin at the line, Hunter struck again in transition. Jarrett secured the rebound and pushed the break, finding Glackin for a layup that cut it back to 62-60 with eight seconds left. Hunter then was forced to foul, and after two more free throws made it 64-60, the Hawks had one last look from the perimeter in the final seconds, but the attempt came up short.
Hunter shot 44.9% from the field (22-for-49) and went 7-for-17 from 3-point range, while finishing 9-for-13 at the free-throw line. Jarrett anchored the Hawks on the glass with 12 rebounds as Hunter totaled 35 boards and stayed within range down the stretch.
