Charles Named Player of the Year; Henriques, DeRuy Recognized

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced its women's basketball postseason awards, with senior standout, Alexa Charles, leading the charge as Player of the Year, her third major conference award title of her career. 

Charles also earning First-Team All-Conference for the third consecutive season, as she passed last year's Co-Player of the Year, Mia Castillo, earlier in the year as the conference's all-time leading scorer (2,669 points). Charles' historic season also saw her breaking conference and program records in field goals made, steals, steals per game, points per game, and triple-doubles. Charles currently sits just seven steals away from the NCAA DIII record and has collected a sundry of regional and national awards this season. She currently has 749 points this season, 199 rebounds, and 147 steals as she became one of just 19 women's basketball players to surpass the 2,000-point, and 1,000-rebound career-milestone, and the only one to do it with over 500 steals. She is shooting 50.7% overall and 32.3% from beyond the arc, with 115 made field goals, also a season and career record for the conference and Hunter College's program. She has secored in double-digits for the last 96 consecutive games.

Charles was joined on the All-Conference First Team by senior forward Gianna Henriques, whose presence in the paint helped power Hunter's championship run. Henriques is averaging 10.2 points per game, and 9.3 rebounds. The senior has tallied 68 blocks this season and collected eight double-doubles.

Senior Kennedy DeRuy, was named to the conference's Sportsmanship Team. A spark off the bench last year, and a starter for her senior season, DeRuy had her best season to date, with 169 points (6.3 per game) and 115 rebounds (4.3 per game).

The Hawks return to action on Friday for the CUNYAC Championship against top-seeded Brooklyn College at 6:30 p.m. hosted by Baruch.
