NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Hunter College softball team opened its home slate with a doubleheader sweep of Sarah Lawrence on Friday afternoon, winning both contests by identical 11-3 scores. The Hawks improved to 2-6 on the season, while the Gryphons fell to 0-8.
Game 1: Hunter 11, Sarah Lawrence 3
Hunter struck first in the second inning as Amanda Rivera delivered an RBI single that brought home Madison Drouet and Brianna Flores for a 2-0 lead. Sarah Lawrence responded with three runs in the top of the third to move in front, but the Hawks answered immediately in the bottom half.
Sonia Rosales-Rosenthal tied the game with an RBI single to score Ramirez, and Isabella Thumhart followed with a double to plate pinch runner Kaitlyn Mitchell and restore the lead. Hunter continued to build momentum in the fifth inning, as Rosales-Rosenthal added an RBI double and Thumhart reached on an infield error that allowed another run to score.
Elizabeth Thompson and Grace Basil each contributed singles, while Drouet added a double as the Hawks pulled away to secure the run-rule victory in five innings.
In the circle, Bidinger earned her first win of the season, striking out six while allowing two earned runs.
Game 2: Hunter 11, Sarah Lawrence 3
Hunter carried its offensive momentum into game two, jumping out early and never looking back. Rosales-Rosenthal opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, and Rivera added another run in the second with a sacrifice bunt.
Alejandra Aquino recorded an RBI single in the third before Thompson delivered a two-run triple to extend the lead to 5-0. Later in the inning, Giordana Bowen launched Hunter's first home run of the season, a two-run shot that pushed the advantage to 7-0.
Sarah Lawrence got on the board in the fourth, but the Hawks quickly responded as Thumhart drove in two runs with a single to make it 9-1. The Gryphons added two runs in the fifth, but Hunter answered in the bottom half when Bidinger reached on an error, allowing Bowen to score and end the game via the run rule at 11-3.
Bowen earned the win in the circle, striking out six over five innings of work.
Hunter returns to action Sunday, March 21, for a doubleheader at Montclair State.
