Basil Records 500th Strike Out in CUNYAC Sweep at York

QUEENS, N.Y.- Grace Basil recorded her 500th career strikeout in dominant fashion, finishing with 503 and leading the Hunter College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of York (N.Y.) on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks rolled to a 16-0 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 15-1 win in game two, improving to 7-19 overall and 4-0 in CUNYAC play.

Game 1: Hunter 16, York (N.Y.) 0
Basil headlined the opener both in the circle and at the plate, reaching a major career milestone while powering a dominant performance.

The junior struck out 12 batters over five shutout innings to surpass the 500-career strikeout mark, allowing just four hits and one walk. At the plate, Basil went 4-for-5 with a double and six RBIs to pace a 14-hit attack.

Hunter got on the board in the first inning and quickly pulled away, scoring in every frame. The Hawks broke the game open with a four-run third inning and a five-run fourth, capitalizing on timely hitting and drawing nine walks.

Sonia Rosales Rosenthal added three hits and an RBI, while Brianna Flores recorded a multi-hit game with two RBIs. Kaitlyn Mitchell provided a spark off the bench with three RBIs, and Alejandra Aquino added a hit and an RBI as Hunter cruised to the run-rule victory.

Game 2: Hunter 15, York (N.Y.) 1
Hunter carried its offensive momentum into game two, scoring 15 runs on 15 hits to complete the sweep.

The Hawks jumped out early with three runs in the first inning before adding three more in the second. Hunter continued to build its lead with a four-run third and a five-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

Sonia Rosales led the offense with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, while Isabella Thumhart went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Madison Drouet added two hits and two RBIs, and Alejandra Aquino delivered a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate.

In the circle, Drouet earned the win with three scoreless innings, striking out five, while Thumhart closed out the game in relief.

The Hawks return to action on April 11 against Mount Saint Vincent for a double-header on Randall's Island.
