HARRISON, N.Y.- The Hunter College women's volleyball team returned to action Friday evening, falling to Manhattanville University in three sets on the road at Kennedy Gymnasium.
The Hawks (1-3) struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the opening set. Hunter kept within reach early before Manhattanville (2-3) pulled away, as the Hawks dropped the first frame, 25-15.
Hunter looked to respond in the second set, but an early run by the hosts put the Hawks in a hole. Hunter was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 25-13 to go down two sets in the match.
The Hawks showed improvement offensively in the third, recording eight kills while committing seven errors. Hunter continued to battle but was unable to extend the match, dropping the final set, 25-17.
Arianna Calderon Jimenez paced Hunter's attack with a team-high seven kills while adding five digs. River Sutch followed with six kills and four digs, while Michelle Liu chipped in four kills and was a force at the net with five block assists.
Sofia Marolla directed the offense with 13 assists while contributing a team-high eight digs. Maya Cosmo added seven digs, while Kassidy Cruz Nuesi recorded three kills, two block assists and a service ace. Marina Goryuk led Hunter from the service line with two aces.
Defensively, the Hawks recorded 14 block assists, with Melissa Alfaro adding three and Sutch and Cruz Nuesi contributing two apiece. Hunter finished the night with 22 kills, 18 assists, 38 digs and four service aces.
The Hawks look to bounce back on Sept. 22 as they open up conference play at CCNY.
