Derrick Lawson

Coach Lawson joins the Hunter College men’s basketball staff in 2011-12 after spending the previous two years as the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Murry Bergtraum HS in Manhattan. Under his tutelage, Bergtraum made the playoffs both years where Lawson was instrumental in leading the team to a landmark victory over double A opponent, Manhattan Center HS in the Manhattan borough playoffs.

For the last 7 years, Lawson has been coaching the PrimeTime Roadrunners.  Lawson has coached NBA players, including Nate Robinson (Golden State Warriors), Sundiata Gaines (NJ Nets), Brandon Jennings( Milwaukee Bucks) and Danny Green(San Antonio Spurs).

Lawson, returns to his alma mater as a former Hawk himself, the guard played for Hunter during the 1992-94. In that time frame the Hawks went 51-7 and were undefeated in CUNYAC competition both  seasons. Lawson was named to the All-Tournament team both seasons for his performance on the court.

Lawson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Communications Studies from Hunter College in 1995. Lawson also holds master's degrees in Urban Education (Mt. St. Vincent, 2005) as well as Adolsecent Education and School Building Leadership (Mercy College, 2008 & 2009). He has been teaching since 1998 and is currently Dean of Students.
