Walter Rodriguez begins his collegiate coaching career during the 2021 season. He will be the Head Coach of both the men's and women's cross country teams.
Rodriguez makes the transition to the coaching side after being a standout distance runner for the Hawks for four years from 2013-2017. During his time in a Hunter uniform, he garnered two CUNYAC All-Star nods, a CUNYAC Sportsmanship kudos, and was the individual race champion and Runner of the Year during his final season. He boasts an 8k personal best of 26:40.
Rodriguez played a big part in leading Hunter to third place team finishes at the CUNYAC Championships during both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. As a senior he was crowned the individual race championship in 2016 which propelled the Hawks to a second place finish.
Rodriguez graduated Hunter College in the spring of 2017 with a degree in economics and a minor in psychology. He is currently in rolled at Fordham university pursuing his masters of science in business analytics.
In March of 2017, he began working at the Hewitt School as the Head varsity cross country and track and field coach. At the helm, he led Hewitt to a second place indoor/outdoor championship finish, the highest in school history. In 2020, he added to his responsibilities there By becoming a physical education teacher.
Rodriguez has also served as the Head of Youth Chair and Run Coach for the Brooklyn Track Club; a position he’s held since 2019. In his role, he prioritized and managed the performances of a community of 300+ athletes through creating individualized workout plans based on the athlete goals. He also lead athlete live experiences through knowledge of local NYC community races to enrich the NYC running culture and create a racing schedule for an optimized athletes’ journey
Lastly, in his most recent venture, the South Richmond Hill product, was a Multi-sports Counselor at Future Stars Summer Camp. Part of his responsibilities camper programming budgeting, and overseeing a full-time staff.
Rodriguez is USATF Level 1 Coaching and USATF Level 2 Endurance Coaching.certified.
