Marvin Hawkins is in his third season as head coach of the Hunter College men’s indoor track and field team. Since taking over the program in August 2022, Hawkins has guided the Hawks to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the CUNYAC Championships while developing one of the league’s most competitive field units.
In 2024–25, Hawkins led Hunter to a second-place finish at the CUNYAC Indoor Championships, earning 184 team points and medals in the mile, 800m, 3000m, triple jump, and shot put. Solomon Kumi was named both CUNYAC Championship MVP and Field Athlete of the Year after winning the triple jump (12.63m), finishing second in the high jump (1.75m), and third in the long jump (5.85m). He was one of nine Hawks named CUNYAC All-Stars, alongside standouts Harrison Abarca, Mateo Penafiel, and Melvil Badier.
Hawkins brings more than 31 years of coaching experience to the program, including 28 years as head coach at Irving High School, where he won 25 team championships and coached 18 All-Americans. He is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and a former standout runner at Essex Catholic High School and Seton Hall University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
Known for his calm leadership and ability to develop both sprinters and jumpers, Hawkins continues to build depth across all event groups while fostering a culture of accountability and growth on and off the track.
