Sean Fortune is entering his 8th season as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. His primary responsibilities include assisting with the Hawks’ middle distance and long distance runners, as well as recruiting. In his time at Hunter, Fortune helped lead the Hawks to a combined 27 individual conference champions in the distance events on the track along with 2 team titles. In cross country, 3 individual conference titles and 1 team conference title. Additionally, during his tenure at Hunter, the Hawks had their 2013 women’s 4x 800 and one women’s 10k runner – Lizzy Mahoney, qualify for the ECAC championships that same year.
A USAT&F Level 2 coach in Endurance, Fortune has been coaching runners of all ages since 2008 when he founded Central Park Coaching and the USAT&F club team - Manhattan Athletic Club, while at the same time working with the New York Road Runners as a coaching specialist. During this time he has coached hundreds of runners to personal bests, along with serving as a meet organizer for the NYRR’s youth track and field series. Additionally, Fortune has privately coached one 1500m runner to the finals of the Junior Olympics, one cross country New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) Champion and four New York State Federation Championship qualifiers in track and cross country.
A 1999 graduate of Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Fortune raced his first marathon his senior year. As a post-collegiate runner, Fortune competed for 8 years with the Central Park Track Club – New Balance, primarily focusing on cross country and track. During this time, he routinely was a team scorer at USAT&F club nationals on the track and in cross country. Additionally, he’s won a couple New York Road Runners events and the 2006 USAT&F Northeast 5k track title. That same year, he placed 227th overall in the New York City Marathon. Currently, Fortune is attempting to still race competitively as a Masters runner for the Manhattan Athletic Club.
In addition to his track & field experience, Fortune spent 8 years at Citigroup as a licensed operations specialist from 2000-08. A native of Glen Head, NY, Fortune resides in New York, NY.
