In the 2022-23 season under Schortgen's second year at helm, the Hawks' held a 12 game winning streak and went undefeated in conference play as they were named regular season champions with Schortgen winning his second straight Coach of the Year title. In addition, Matisse Lee-Maarek was named CUNYAC Player of the Year and Sergio Aguado was named Libero of the Year while four student-athletes were named to All-Conference Teams. Matisee Lee-Mararek was named AVCA All Region Team Newcomer of the Year (North East), and earned a spot on the AVCA All Region Team (North East), one of just two freshman across the country selected. The team ranked top in the conference for points, hitting %, assists, and kills. The Hawks ranked in several DIII statistical catergories for the season including fifth in opponent's hitting percentage (.124), 11th in kills per set (12.1) and 18th in hitting percetage (.273).

The 2021-22 Men’s Volleyball season was Chris Schortgen’s coaching debut for the Hunter Hawks. As head coach, he led the team to an overall 12-8 record, while  in-conference the hawks ended 11-1. Schortgen led a young team, as 6/13 rostered Hawks were underclassmen. This underdog team started out the season with a few tough losses in their first 5 games. But with Schortgen’s guidance the team took charge of the season beginning with a win against John Jay College on 3/1/22. They then went on to capture 12 more wins this season, bringing them all the way to the top seed of the CUNYAC Men’s Volleyball Championship. They faced the John Jay Bloodhounds again in the semifinals and dominated with a 3-1 win. Schortgen’s Hawks faced their only in-conference loss, Baruch College, again at the CUNYAC champions, ultimately taking a tough loss to their season rivals. 
 
The Hawks showed tremendous growth during this season, earning Chris Scandole and Cooper Moran a  spot on the CUNYAC Championship All-Tournament team. The City University of New York Athletic Conference recognized Coach Schortgen’s outstanding work, and named him 2021-22 Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year. In addition, Chris Scandole earned Libero of the Year, and the hawks secured spots on both First and Second Team all-conference. 
Chris Schortgen joined the Hunter Athletic staff in the Fall of 2021 as the Head Coach of the men's volleyball program.

Schortgen was an assistant coach for the men's volleyball team at Pratt University from 2018-20 where he helped the women's team to a conference championship appearance, an HVIAC regular seaosn title, and a 19-7 mark which set the school record for single season victories. He was also honored as part of the HVIAC Co-Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to coaching on the collegiate level, Schortgen was the head coach at both the Hewitt School as well as the Grace Church School. He also had a two-year stint as the head coach for both 16's and 17's Beach Elite Volleyball in Virginia Beach, Virginia. During that time his also served as Head Technical Director.

He has also been involved in youth programs in the area, serving as both Director and Consultant for the Success Academy Charter School, Manhattan Youth, Yorkville Youth Association and Yeshiva University.

As a player, Schortgen was a setter and outside hitter for the D1/DII Mount Olive men's volleyball team from 2005-06. He then went on to Virginia Commonwealth University where he was a founder for the DI club program. There, he earned his bachelors degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness in 2009.
