John Garrett completed his 10th season at the helm of the Hunter College women’s basketball program in 2024–25, continuing a decade-long tenure defined by player development, postseason success, and record-breaking achievements. Garrett has amassed more than 125 career wins with the Hawks and has coached multiple CUNYAC Players of the Year, All-Met selections, and three 1,500-point scorers.
This past season, Garrett led Hunter to a 21-7 overall record, a 13-1 CUNYAC mark, and a regular-season conference title. The Hawks went undefeated at home and advanced to the CUNYAC Championship final, powered by a league-best defense and the historic season of Alexa Charles, who shattered Hunter’s career scoring and steals records while ranking second nationally in points per game. Hunter earned an ECAC postseason bid and reached the semifinals after a 96-87 win over Goucher. Garrett was named the 2025 CUNYAC Coach of the Year, and both Charles and Erin Cosio received All-Conference honors.
Garrett guided Hunter to a CUNYAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018–19, as well as multiple ECAC postseason berths. His teams have made the conference semifinals in seven of the last nine seasons, including back-to-back title game appearances in 2019–20 and 2024–25. Under his leadership, the Hawks have produced All-Americans, Scholar-Athletes, and All-Met honorees, including standout Jade Aponte, who earned All-Met DIII Player of the Year and WBCA Honorable Mention All-America.
Before joining Hunter, Garrett spent four years as an assistant men’s basketball coach at SUNY Old Westbury and holds a master’s degree in Sports Management from Adelphi University, where he is also an adjunct professor in the Sports Management program. He received his undergraduate degree in History/Secondary Education from Marist College.
Garrett lives on Long Island with his wife, Aybike, and their two children, Kayra and Tanner.
