A closer look at Coach "Z."
One of the longest tenured coaches in Hunter Athletics history, Ed Zarowin enters into his 30th season at the helm of both the men’s and women’s cross country teams and men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track & field teams
A 1996 inductee into the Hunter Athletic Hall of Fame, the man known more affectionately as “Coach Z”, has guided student-athletes to all levels of success including three individual NCAA Division III National Championships, 23 All-Americans, and 45 CUNY Athletic Conference Championships in Cross Country and Track & Field combined.
Since the inception of the CUNYAC Cross Country Championship in 1989, the Hawks, under Coach Z, have won 15 men’s and 11 women’s championships while 14 men and 13 women have been crowned as the individual race winners.
In track and field, the men’s indoor/outdoor teams have combine for 12 CUNYAC titles while the women have combine for seven since it’s inception in 1996.
A 33 time CUNYAC Coach of the Year, Zarowin guided the men to conference triple crown honors in 1995-96, 1996-97 and 2002-03 while women achieved the trifecta, first in 1997-98 and then again in 2003-04.
Zarowin, a graduate of NYU, earned a bachelor of science in education that would lead him to an Assistant Principal position at Brooklyn Tech High School where he spend 33 years. During his tenure at Brooklyn Tech, Coach Z spent 22 years as the head coach of both the cross country and track and field teams, leading several of those teams to top rankings in the nation.
Zarowin and his wife, Mary, reside in the Marine Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. They have two sons, Paul and Louis, and three grandchildren, Diana, Joseph and David.
