Sasha Martell

Sasha Martell is in her first year as the pool coordinator after joining the Hunter College Athletic staff in October of 2012. In her current capacity, Martell creates and provides schedules for staff lifeguards and rental supervisors at Hunter College. She also assists the staff in the everyday recreational use and functioning of both Hunter North and Brookdale campuses. Martell supervises the on-duty lifeguards and pool hosts ensuring that the appropriate protocols are being followed as directed by the Recreation Director, Facility Manager, and the Board of Health while providing a proactive and engaging environment through consistent customer service.
 
With over 16 years of competitive experience in Aquatics, Martell previously served as an assistant coach on the Hawks women’s swimming and diving team during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. From 2005-2013, she instructed youths and teens on stroke mechanics for the YMCA of Greater New York. At the YMCA, she taught the fundamentals of swimming, equipped  youth with skill building,  implemented core values and prepared these individuals to become competitive athletes.
 
A 2010 Hunter College graduate, Martell received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in sociology. She is a former Hawk student-athlete participating on the women’s swimming and diving team from 2007-09, were she contributed to two CUNYAC Championships underneath coach Scott Bitner.
 
In 2012, Martell was honored by the YMCA of Greater NY for the rescue of a long time member who suffered from Myocardial Infarction during his daily morning swim. Martell competed for the Flushing Flyers and the Boys and Girls Club of NY club swim teams.
 
During her off time, Martell works with disadvantage kids in a DOE program called the Educational Talent Search Program. This program prepares children for the prospect of college, broadening their horizons and introducing them to healthy lifestyles, punctuality, commitment and determination. “This program helps to manifest values and set priorities in their lives so that they are educated on what the future could hold for them, and that college can be a positive experience that can be achieved by them”, comments Martell.
 
Martell is NHA licensed Phlebotomist, American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguard Management, Lifeguarding, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, YSL swim instructor, and CPR.
 
A native of Astoria, Queens NY, Martell is currently pursuing her goals to become a Registered Nurse at Beth Israel School of Nursing and is working to transfer into the RN program at NYU in 2014.
