Pete Jacobson

Pete Jacobson is in his second season as head coach of the Hunter College wrestling program and also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director. He was hired in 2023 by Director of Athletics Terry Wansart, who praised his leadership background, wrestling experience, and “can-do attitude.” A former New York City firefighter and longtime Westchester coach, Jacobson brings a foundation of discipline, resilience, and mentorship to the Hawks.

In 2024–25, Jacobson guided Hunter through a rigorous schedule that featured nationally ranked opponents, regional tri-matches, and back-to-back tournaments across the Northeast. The Hawks earned dual victories over Kean, New Jersey City, Waynesburg, and Utica, and posted several individual wins at major tournaments including the Mariner Duals and NY vs. PA Duals. At the NCAA Region II Championships, Botensky Bauzile and Jayden Medina each placed, becoming Hunter’s first All-Region honorees since 2020. Both were also named NCAA Division III Scholar Athlete All-Americans, marking a standout academic and athletic year for the program.

Before joining Hunter, Jacobson spent 21 years as the head coach at Edgemont High School, where he built one of the most respected programs in Section 1. His athletes earned 66 All-Section honors, 29 sectional titles, 15 All-State honors, and 3 New York State Championships. He was a multiple-time League Coach of the Year and was twice named LoHud-Journal News Wrestling Coach of the Year.
In addition to his coaching achievements, Jacobson served as a firefighter and first responder with the FDNY from 2002 to 2022. His background in psychology, leadership, and athlete development informs his coaching philosophy, which prioritizes grit, accountability, and growth both on and off the mat.
