Hunter College Athletics and Recreation has named Gamal Abiona as the new Deputy Director in 2023. Abiona comes to sportsplex from UMASS Boston where he was the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Operation, a post he held since 2017. Abiona served on the Senior Leadership team at UMass Boston, providing leadership and oversight of all aspects of athletic facilities and events and coordinating all off-campus facility use. He was responsible for developing the athletic facilities' master planning initiatives in congruence with the university's master plan. He also served as the athletic department project manager for capital projects and facility renovations.
In 2019 Abiona played an integral part in hosting the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championship. He has also served as the tournament director for the 2019 NCAA Division III Regional and Super Regional baseball championships.
Prior to his arrival on the harbor campus, Abiona served as the Associate Director of Arena Operations at Division I Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
Abiona is a member of the Minority Opportunity Athletic Association, the Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association, and the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society.
