Marc Gershel

Marc Gershel joined Hunter College as the Head Swim Coach in 2025, bringing a wealth of experience in competitive swimming and endurance coaching.

Gershel has served as Head Coach of the NYC Hydras, a U.S. Masters Swimming team, since 2015, where he has developed athletes across all levels, built a strong team culture, and managed training trips and team operations. Since 2017, he has also been the Head Coach at Breakaway Endurance, a USA Triathlon program, where he designed individualized training plans, implemented a strength and conditioning program for triathletes, and coordinated domestic and international race trips.

As an athlete himself, Gershel has an accomplished record, highlighted by competing at the 2021 Ironman 70.3 World Championship and earning recognition as an Ironman All World Athlete in 2023. He also claimed a podium finish at the 2016 U.S. Masters Swimming Open Water National Championship and has earned multiple U.S. Masters Swimming Age Group National Top 10 awards, including victories at the St. Croix 1-Mile and 2-Mile swims in 2017 and 2018.

Gershel holds a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in economics from the University of Arizona. He is certified as a U.S. Masters Swimming Level 3 Head Coach, as well as in AED, CPR, and lifeguarding.Â
