New York, NY – Freshman guard
Megan McKenna (Rockaway Beach, NY/Midwood) scored 14 points and had five rebounds in her first action since the second game of the season, but her efforts would not be enough as the Hawks fall short at home to Lehman College, 69-61 in CUNY Athletic Conference women's basketball action at the Hunter Sportsplex.
McKenna had missed 14 games following an injury she sustained in the Hawks second game of the season back on November 17. She played 31 minutes off the bench tonight and provided the Hawks with support at the guard position.
The Hawks played a strong first half and held a one point lead, holding the 7-1 Lightning to just 23 points. However, Lehman came out strong in the second half, pressuring Hunter to commit 17 turnovers that led to 18 Lehman points, the difference maker in this one.
Sophomore forward
Andrea Buckham (Jamaica, NY/Flushing) had a game high 19 points for Hunter and recorded her eighth double-double with 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Mona McKenzie (New York, NY/Park West) also had a nice game for the Hawks finishing with 11 points, six assits and five rebounds.
Lehman was led by the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Year, junior
Sally Nnamani (Warwick, NY/Warwick) and senior
Tiara Carroll (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan) who each scored 18 points and combined for five rebounds and assists.
The women's team will return to action on Wednesday, January 23 when Hunter hosts CCNY for a double header of men's and women's action. This will be the second meeting between Hunter and CCNY this year, earlier in the season, the Hawks came up on the short end of a 58-56 final.
