Branch El-Vielot’s 20 Points Sends Hawks Past CCNY, 65-49

New York, NY – Junior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) lead all scorers on Friday night with 20 points to help five the Hawks their second straight conference win with a 65-49 victory over The City College of New York Friday evening on Homecoming night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

For the second consecutive game, the Hawks never trailed, despite the game being tied on four occasions. They held a 28-24 lead after one half of play, with junior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) leading the way with seven points and eight rebounds. The Hawks would go on to outscore the Beavers 37-25 in the second half, Branch El-Vielot scored 13 of her 20 points in the second period.

Whyms finished with a double-double, 15 points and 14 rebounds, while junior forward Andrea Buckham (Jamaica, NY/Flushing) added a double-double of her own with 16 points and 11 boards.

The Beavers were led by sophomore guard Anika Rivera (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scalan) who scored 13 points and had seven steals, but was the only one on her team to finish in double figures. Sophomore center Ashley Straughn (Freeport, NY/Freeport) contributed with nine points and eight rebounds.

After tonight's victory, the Hawks improve to 3-2 on the year and are 2-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Beavers fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Hunter will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host the Panthers of Old Westbury College for a non-conference 7:00 p.m. game at the Hunter Sportsplex.
